About
Events such as the tragedy of 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and other natural disasters that have occurred highlight the need for an initiative to encourage citizens to prepare for emergencies. In New York City, with its more than 8.2 million diverse residents, the New York City Office of Emergency Management (OEM), the American Red Cross in Greater New York and the Ad Council joined together to create the Ready New York City PSA campaign designed to educate and empower New Yorkers to prepare for and respond to emergencies including natural and man-made disasters. Ready New York City asks individuals to do three key things: 1) get an emergency supply kit, 2) make a family emergency plan, and 3) be informed about the different types of emergencies that could occur and their appropriate responses.
According to a 2009 OEM survey, 40 percent of New Yorkers said they did not feel prepared for an emergency, such as a natural disaster, fire, power outage or act of terrorism. Additionally, 40 percent said they did not have any form of a household emergency plan, and 73 percent did not have all of the recommended emergency supplies.
New York City Office of Emergency Management (OEM)
Established in 1996, the New York City Office of Emergency Management (OEM) plans and prepares for emergencies, educates the public about preparedness, coordinates emergency response and recovery, and collects and disseminates emergency information.
To accomplish this mission, OEM maintains a disciplined unit of emergency management personnel, including responders, planners, watch commanders, and administrative and support staff, to identify and respond to various hazards.
American Red Cross in Greater New York
The American Red Cross in Greater New York (ARC/GNY) is a key humanitarian partner and a vital participant in New York's plans and programs to help the nine million people in New York City and Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Sullivan counties prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. ARC/GNY responds to an average of 8 emergencies a day-fires, floods, building collapses-and provides immediate humanitarian aid to as many as 100,000 people affected by these emergencies each year. The Chapter also helps New York residents and businesses prepare for emergencies by offering hundreds of lifesaving courses and emergency preparedness training programs and resources. ARC/GNY is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization, not a government agency, and relies on donations to fund its free humanitarian services.
